The Autism Treatment Center established in Dallas in 1976 when autism was still a largely mysterious developmental disorder. In fact, it was such a rarity that 1 in 10,000 children were diagnosed with autism and next to no treatment or therapies being offered. With the exponential increase in autism, now 1 in 44, the programs have had to expand and serve more individuals. More children with autism means more individuals with autism, and a need for more education therapy, residential and vocational programs that help them live as independently as possible. The increase in service has also seen an increase in the ATC's budget. The ATC is working hard on expanding services to meet this ever growing need but they need your help.
For the past 46 years, the Autism Treatment Center has assisted individuals with autism throughout their lives as they learn, play, work and live in the community. Calls and referrals to the ATC for autism services have increased significantly; approximately 1,500 a year! The ATC is working to increase the number of classrooms, therapy rooms, therapists and group homes in the community to meet the needs of these individuals.
The ATC now owns and operates 26 group homes (22 of them are mortgage free), 3 therapy clinics and 2 schools. They serve children and adults from 54 cities across the state. The Autism Treatment Center provides residential services, educational services, adult services, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, diagnostics, assessments and community awareness.
The mission of the Autism Treatment Center is to assist people with autism and related disorders throughout their lives as they learn, play, work and live in the community. The ATC is a private, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) corporation providing its services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Anna Hundley is the Executive Director of the Autism Treatment Center, a position she has held since 1982. In 1985, Anna was appointed by Texas Governor Mark White to be a founding member of the Texas Autism Task Force, charged with developing the State Plan of services for people with autism. Since then, she has been appointed by five consecutive governors to serve on several statewide councils, including the Texas Council on Autism and Pervasive Developmental Disorders where she served as Vice Chair; in 2012, Anna was appointed by Governor Rick Perry to the State Independent Living Council.
